The Veterans Day celebration is a time to honor the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It’s also a day for Americans to reflect on what it means to be an American, and how fortunate we are that people like you stepped up when they were needed most. The Origin of Veterans Day

The origin of Veterans Day came from Armistice Day which was created after World War I when people celebrated the “war to end all wars.” After WWII ended with Japan signing an armistice agreement on September second in 1952 (also known as Victory over Japan or V-J), President Harry Truman did put the name Veteran’s Day on November 11th.

On that day, we honor all veterans for their courage to serve our country in battle or during peacetime, and for defending our freedom today. Not only do we thank them for what they’ve done throughout history, but we also give honor to the families that have sacrificed just as much.

Observance of Veterans Day

Since it’s a federal holiday, all federal offices and banks are closed. It’s a day off, just like any other holiday! Although not all Americans are veterans, we still take this day to remember what they’ve done for us and the sacrifices that have been made. So many people were affected by wars on both sides of their families who fought in them or died as a result of it.

Leading up to Veterans Day, there is usually an emphasis placed on honoring those who have served our country during times of war with parades and other activities across the country. It’s our way to show appreciation for what they’ve done and give thanks.

On this day, we remember all of the veterans who have served in any capacity since World War I but mainly focus on those who fought during WWII or other wars. We must honor all veterans who have served in any capacity, whether they were on active duty or not.

Even if you aren’t a veteran yourself, you can still celebrate and honor those who have served by giving thanks to them in some way.

1. Buy A Flag

This may sound like an overly simplistic way to honor veterans, but there are many reasons why buying a flag is important. Not only does it help support our troops, but it reminds us of what they fight for–our country and its values. Plus, when someone tells their friends that they saw your flag flying proudly outside your house or business on Veterans Day, you may find that people will want to buy flags too! And this could lead to some great conversations about veterans and what they’ve done.

This is an act of patriotism and an act of love. There are always flags on sale for Veterans Day, so it’s a great time to buy one.

2. Watch a war film together as a family

This is a great time to sit down and watch a war film with your family. This can be used as an educational tool, but also just something that everyone in the house could enjoy together. To make it more fun, you could even play trivia games before or after watching about what was going on during certain wars or battles; this will help ensure that they’ve been paying attention!

It can be difficult for kids (and adults) who weren’t alive when these events happened to understand them until they see visual representations of them–especially if their parents didn’t serve themselves.

Below are some awesome movies to watch all year round, but especially on Veterans Day!

• Saving Private Ryan: This movie is based on a true story about the search for the last surviving brother of four others who were killed in action during WWII. It’s set after D-Day when troops are trying to take back Europe from Germany but focuses mainly on what happened with this specific family and how they lost three brothers fighting for their country.
• Hacksaw Ridge: This movie is based on the true story of an army medic who refused to carry a gun but saved dozens of lives anyway–and was later awarded a Medal of Honor for his efforts. This shows that you don’t have to kill people or be violent to serve your country and save other people’s lives.
• Iron Will: Although this isn’t based on a true story, it’s still an incredible film about perseverance. It follows the real-life adventures of Will Stoneman, who was determined to become one of the first men to cross North America via dogsled to win back his family farm.
• The Patriot: This is another movie that isn’t based on a true story, but it is still an incredible film about the American Revolution. It follows a family in South Carolina who are living through some of the most tumultuous times in our nation’s history–including battles with Native Americans and British troops.
• We Were Soldiers: This movie also isn’t based on a true story; however, it does show what happened during a particular battle in Vietnam that turned the tide of war. It’s full of emotion and action, so it will be sure to keep everyone entertained!
• To End All Wars: This movie is about World War I–a time when America was still trying to stay out of European wars but eventually got involved after Germany sank merchant ships right outside U.S. borders. It follows a British-born officer who is sent to help command the Allied forces in France and what happens when he befriends a German fellow prisoner of war.

3. Buy a poppy to wear on your lapel or tie and wear it the whole day of November 11th

Buying a poppy is an important part of Veterans Day. It’s not just about buying poppies to wear on your lapel or tie but wearing it the whole day of November 11th as well.

Wearing these on their ties or jackets are more than just fashion statements–they’re symbols that will help people remember what this holiday stands for and who has fought to preserve our freedom all along.

This is one of my favorite memories from when I was younger because it makes me feel like I’m still connected with those servicemen even though they’ve retired now! It might be something nice to do together so you can also talk about how thankful you are for them being willing to fight for us–even if we didn’t agree with what was going on at the time.

This day is about remembering those who have fought for our freedom and there’s no better way to do that than by wearing a poppy on your lapel or tie all day!

4. Attend A Parade Or Other Event

Attending a parade or other event is one of the best ways to honor veterans on Veterans Day. Once a year, almost every city in America holds some sort of event to honor Veterans Day and the veterans who fought for our freedom.

These can be from big events where they have tons of different people marching down Main Street to small parades with just one or two groups participating. No matter what kind is being held in your town, you should consider going!

This is because it gives us a chance to show support for those who served their country by attending these types of events–and that’s something we really need more of during this holiday season. Not only will you get treated with cool performances but there are also usually free giveaways as well!

5. Participate In A Blood Drive

Participating in a blood drive is one of the best ways to honor veterans on Veterans Day. These are usually held at places like churches or community centers, so be sure to check your local newspaper for announcements about them! It’s not just important because it helps save lives but also because it allows you to support our servicemen and women at the same time.

Every year, over 38,000 blood donations are needed to be collected for hospitals across our country to give patients the care that they need–and this holiday is a perfect chance to do your part!

This allows you to support veterans while also saving lives at the same time by giving blood!

6. Write A Thank You Letter

Writing a thank you letter is one of the best ways to honor veterans on Veterans Day. This is because it allows us to show our gratitude towards those who have served their country and risked everything for us–and that’s something we should never forget!

It doesn’t matter if they’re retired from service or still actively serving, this is an important thing to do all year long but especially during Veterans Day when we remember what happened in our past so we can move forward together as a nation. This way, not only will you be thankful for them being willing to fight for your freedom but also giving back by sharing some kind words with them too!

For most people, writing a thank- card might feel like just another thing to do that day. But think about it this way: you’ll be showing your support for veterans while also spreading some holiday cheer!

7. Volunteer

Volunteering allows us to show our gratitude towards those who have served their country and put themselves in danger just so we can live out the lives that we do–and for this, they deserve all of the help we can give them!

Whether it’s collecting food or clothing donations or helping at a local soup kitchen, every bit helps when it comes to showing how much you care about all these men and women who were willing to fight for your freedom.
